Amazon Basics 50°F Sleeping Bag Review: A Lot More Bag Than $20 Should Buy

The Amazon Basics 50°F sleeping bag is comfortable, reasonably light, and surprisingly well built for the price. At around $20, it feels more like a $40 sleeping bag and stands out as an excellent value for mild-weather camping.

Amazon Basics 50°F Sleeping Bag Review

The Amazon Basics 50°F sleeping bag is a surprisingly capable budget camping bag that offers a lot more than its price suggests.

Amazon Basics Sleeping Bag Review

At around $20, I really did not expect much from this sleeping bag. I was actually looking for something small and cheap I could throw in my line pack while firefighting; however, this was not for that. It was difficult to tell the size of this bag packed from the Amazon pics, but I thought for 20 bucks, it is worth a gamble.

What I got was a comfortable, reasonably lightweight sleeping bag that feels more like something that should cost around $40. I paid $20.49 for mine, and at the time of this review it is selling for $17.41.

It is certainly not a premium backpacking bag, but it does not feel particularly cheap either. It was not at all what I was after, but it is a really good bag for other jobs.

The Good

The biggest strength here is value.

The bag is comfortable, the construction is surprisingly good, and the overall size and weight are reasonable for a basic synthetic sleeping bag.

Amazon lists the weight at 3.21 pounds, but mine weighed 2.6 pounds on my scale. For this type of bag, that is actually pretty respectable.

The build quality also surprised me. It is obviously not constructed like a $200 sleeping bag, but there is nothing about it that immediately feels disposable or poorly made.

For less than $20 on sale, there is simply a lot of sleeping bag here. I was after something more packable for my line pack. This is a lot more sleeping bag than I had asked for, and it just does not pack down for what I needed. That said, this would be an amazing entry level bag for those not looking to abuse it at a spike camp.

The Not-So-Good

The included storage bag is probably my biggest complaint.

Amazon describes it as a compression sack, but it really does not compress the sleeping bag very much. The sleeping bag itself appears capable of packing smaller than the included bag allows. Sure, I could use another compression stuff sack and get this bag packed down, but then it would not be a $20 bag anymore. Which is not what I am reviewing.

Packed up, it is not overly bulky. It just is not particularly small either.

For normal camping that probably will not matter much. If space is important, replacing the included bag with a real compression sack would likely help considerably.

Warmth and Comfort

Amazon advertises this as a three-season sleeping bag with a 50-degree temperature rating.

I would personally think of it more as a mild-weather sleeping bag than a true cold-weather three-season bag.

Around 50°F, I would have no issue using it.

Paired with a decent tent and an R-rated sleeping pad, I could also see it remaining useful pretty deep into the fall.

Comfort is another strong point. It has plenty of room, feels comfortable to lie in, and does not have the cheap feel I expected at this price.

Packability and Weight

The packed size is decent.

It is not something I would consider ultralight or highly compressible, but it is also not an oversized camping bag.

A better compression sack would make a noticeable difference.

The weight was actually better than advertised:

Amazon listed weight: 3.21 lbs
Measured weight: 2.6 lbs

That is almost ten ounces lighter than the published specification.

Final Thoughts

The Amazon Basics 50°F sleeping bag is a simple product that does its job surprisingly well.

It is comfortable, reasonably light, built well enough for regular camping, and its 50°F rating seems realistic.

The included storage sack could be better, and anyone looking for a highly compressible backpacking bag should probably look elsewhere.

But that is not really what this sleeping bag is.

This is a basic, mild-weather camping bag that feels like it should cost around $40, yet routinely sells for around $20.

At the current $17.41 price, it is an exceptional value.
