Robbers Cave State Park Review

Robbers Cave State Park is one of those Oklahoma parks that feels like it has a little bit of everything, and it kind of does.

It has the kind of variety that makes it easy to return to in different seasons. You can come for canoeing, swimming, hiking, biking, horseback riding, wildlife watching, or just to enjoy the scenery. In a lot of ways, it feels like a park that rewards both active visitors and people who just want to slow down and take in the setting.

It is also one of those places that can get a little crowded at times, especially when the weather is good, but for many people that is a fair tradeoff because the park really does deliver.

The Good

Robbers Cave’s has many strengths. One, there are many outdoorsy things to do. You can rent canoes, swim, hike, bike, and ride horses, which gives the park a much broader appeal than a lot of state parks that lean heavily on just one activity. That makes it especially easy to enjoy in spring, summer, fall, and even winter if you are just there for a scenic outing.

The hiking is a major highlight too.

The trail to Robbers Cave itself is only about a mile and change, but it has a nice mix of challenge and accessibility. There are sections that require you to traverse rocks and pay attention to your footing, but it is not so difficult that it becomes frustrating. It is an easy yet very enjoyable hike. Then there are plenty of other hiking options or those that want to get some miles on their lamborfeeties.

Robbers Cave is nestled in a beautiful area that is excellent for wildlife watching, seasonal color, and generally just feeling immersed in the landscape. The changing leaves in the fall are especially appealing, and the park has that kind of atmosphere that makes even a simple drive or walk feel worthwhile.

The Not-So-Good

Robbers Cave is a very good park, but it is not without a few tradeoffs.

Because it is popular and offers so much to do, it can get crowded, particularly during peak seasons and weekends. That is not unusual for a park this well-liked, but it can affect the experience a bit if you are hoping for total quiet.

Another small downside is that if you want to go beyond the main cave area on foot, the setup is not always the most convenient. You can't honestly add too much to your actual hike at the Robbers Cave site. There are plenty of places where you can hike further, but to do it at the exact cave would require road walking. It is workable, but not ideal for just that spot. The longer hikes are great and add to the park's fun. Still, not being able to add too much to your Robbers Cave hike itself is really more of a inconvenience than real dealbreakers. Want to go further? Go to one of the other trailheads.

Another Note

Robbers Cave is the kind of park that feels especially good because of where it is.

It is a little out of the way, and that can be a downside if you are thinking purely in terms of convenience. But in this case, it being out of the way is great for the parks overall feel. It is kind of tucked away in a really very beautiful part of southern Oklahoma and has that southeastern Oklahoma, southeastern Arkansas feel with the vegetation and weather.

So, it feels scenic, because it is.

Camping

Camping is a strong part of the Robbers Cave experience.

The park has plenty of lodging options, which makes it easy to plan a stay whether you are looking for something simple or a more comfortable overnight trip. The park has pretty good flexibility but there is not much around the outside of the park if you were looking for a 3 star accommodation.

Because the park offers so many activities, camping here makes a lot of sense.

You can hike in the morning, swim or canoe in the afternoon, and then enjoy the scenery again at the end of the day.

Wildlife and Nature

This is one of Robbers Cave’s strongest identity features.

The park is in a lovely natural area that is well suited for wildlife watching of all kinds. The combination of wooded surroundings, changing seasons, and a more secluded setting gives it a lot of appeal for people who appreciate nature beyond just the main recreation areas.

I know many people around the Tulsa metro that are very into bird watching. Robbers Cave is a great place to see some birds that maybe aren't as common in some other parts of the state.
Many woodland songbirds, raptor birds, turkeys, woodpeckers, warblers, and all manner of water birds call this part of the state home.

Then you have the fall. This is the perfect park if you enjoy seeing the landscape change as fall and winter approach.

Final Thoughts

Robbers Cave State Park is one of Oklahoma’s most well-rounded parks.

What makes it so strong is the combination of variety, scenery, and seasonal appeal:

  • canoe rentals
  • swimming
  • hiking
  • biking
  • horseback riding
  • wildlife watching
  • beautiful fall color
  • plenty of lodging options
  • a setting that works in all four seasons

This is a very memorable park that feels easy to love. It has a great return actor as I go every time I get the chance. About 2 hours from Tulsa and about 2 and a half from Oklahoma City. The occasional crowds and the drive would not stop me from spending many more weekends out here.
