Wildland vs. structural

Federal wildland jobs (USFS, BLM, NPS, FWS, BIA) now post under the 0456 Wildland Fire Management series, plus some 0462 forestry technician roles. Municipal structural jobs usually post on city and county HR sites and often require Firefighter I/II and EMT-B.

Timing matters

Federal seasonal wildland hiring opens in the fall and winter for the following season. Many city departments test once or twice a year, so set a reminder once a job closes—the next test cycle is the real opening.

Certs that move the needle

S-130/S-190 and a current Pack Test for wildland; FF I/II, EMT or Paramedic, and a CPAT card for structural. A clean driving record and a CDL can set you apart for engine roles.
